Tillandsia 'Rex' is a true masterpiece of hybridization, earning its place as one of the most prized airplants in cultivation. This exceptional plant boasts long, twisting leaves that emerge from a bulbous base in shades of green, gradually transitioning to vibrant shades of red towards the tips. The overall form is reminiscent of an exotic, otherworldly sculpture, living up to its 'Rex' (King) moniker.
What makes 'Rex' truly special is its complex lineage. It's a second-generation hybrid, a rarity in the world of Tillandsias. Its parents, T. 'Showtime' and T. 'Gorgon', are themselves hybrids that took decades to develop. This genetic blend combines the best traits of four remarkable species: T. bulbosa, T. streptophylla, and T. pseudobaileyi.
Tillandsia 'Rex' is only the second known F2 hybrid in the airplant world, the first being Tillandsia 'El Dimmitt Doble'.
Collector's Note: The creation of 'Rex' represents a significant investment of time and expertise, with its grandparent plants taking around 20 years each to grow to maturity before hybridization could occur.
